Reprieve NL is the Dutch arm of the worldwide organization of charities originally founded in the UK as Reprieve. The primary work of Reprieve is to assist prisoners facing the death penalty and to promote standards of fair trial, rule of law, and humanitarian concern. Reprieve NL was founded in Amsterdam in 2006 by Bart Stapert and a group of lawyers who had formerly worked in the US as interns for organizations providing legal assistance to impoverished individuals facing the death penalty at the hands of the state.
The goal of Reprieve NL is to help students and legal practitioners to join in the fight against the death penalty through placement in internships in organizations providing legal assistance to death row inmates in the southern United States. Additionally, Reprieve NL seeks to raise awareness of the global fight against the death penalty through various outreach programs.
